The Criminals by Serhat Karaaslan Shortlisted for the Oscars

The Criminals, directed by Serhat Karaaslan, won the Best National Short Film Award at the 22nd İzmir Short Film Festival. Following its festival success, the film was submitted for consideration for the Academy Awards and was selected among the final 15 films on the Oscar shortlist that year.

İzmir Film Lab

For the past five years, İzmir Film Lab has been organized as a dedicated section of the festival with the aim of providing funding opportunities for short films and supporting projects throughout their development process.

Through training sessions, workshops, and meetings with industry professionals, İzmir Film Lab creates opportunities for emerging filmmakers to strengthen their projects and expand their professional networks.

Each year, the programme also includes training on sustainable filmmaking, helping directors and short film creators develop their knowledge of green production practices and encouraging more environmentally responsible approaches to filmmaking.

Türkiye Short Film Stand in China

Through its partnership with the China International New Media Short Film Festival, one of China’s largest state-supported short film organizations, the İzmir Short Film Festival helped initiate the first co-productions between Türkiye and China.

In the same year, the festival opened a Türkiye stand at CSFF, creating an opportunity to promote Turkish cinema to audiences and industry professionals in China.

At the following year’s festival, Bare Giran (Heavy Burden), directed by Yılmaz Özdil, won the festival’s top prize, the KingBonn Award, which carried a cash prize of 300,000 RMB.
